Crownpoint, New Mexico is home to the beautiful Navajo Nation community; however, below-adequate living conditions have sadly become acceptable after years of being overlooked by others.

Most students arrive in Crownpoint unprepared for the eye-opening experience they are about to take on. Crownpoint is located only a short day’s drive from many wealthy and commercialized US cities, but it is strikingly different. Students step off the bus into a dusty, desert reservation that resembles a third-world country more than a city in the wealthiest country in the world.

The community of about 2,000 residents is deeply impoverished. Houses are deteriorating and lack many of the amenities that American’s take for granted. With no running water, many elderly residents are forced to use out houses, which at their age, is a difficult task.

Despite widespread poverty, Crownpoint is a beautiful community with truly generous people, rich culture and stunning red-canyon horizons. Next Step is grateful to have been welcomed into this unique community with open arms to physically help its residents. In 2010, Next Step students built and repaired over 40 homes in the Crownpoint area and hosted a variety of great community outreach events.

Next summer, students will continue to build new housing additions and make much-needed repairs to existing houses, such as roofing, siding, drywall, stucco, flooring, ramps, stairs and other projects as necessary. Through this important physical labor, your students will show the Navajo Nation how much we – and more importantly God – loves and cares for them.

Join us in Crownpoint, New Mexico for challenging work, cultural emersion, electric worship and an awesome free day with swimming and hiking at Bluewater State Park.

This trip to the breathtaking Navajo Nation is an experience you will never forget.
