Pine Ridge Reservation is one of the largest and most beautiful reservations in the United States. However like many reservations; poverty, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse and other factors have led to a very dismal housing situation. The size of this reservation has unfortunately enhanced the poverty and deteriorating living conditions. The majority of families of Pine Ridge are strong and courageous, but lack the skill and financial means to upkeep their homes and fix even the most basic needs.
Next Step began working in Pine Ridge in 2010 and this community is home to some of the greatest repair and housing needs that we have ever seen. But students can expect to fall in love with the families and children who are the true pulse of the reservation. While students make life-long connections with the families they are serving, they are also able to meet the communities physical needs by working on moderate to heavy repair projects such as flooring, roofing, siding and wheel chair ramps, as well as home additions and new home builds.
On Friday, students will trade in their hammers for their swimsuites and spend a great day swimming and relaxing at the beautiful Angostura State Reservoir.
Pine Ridge has much to teach us about community, family and faith, while your students have an opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the living conditions of these wonderful families. Get ready for an exciting week of cultural imersion, great fellowship and challenging building!
