Emcee 2016, 2017

Being an emcee equipped me to communicate effectively. I was once afraid of speaking in front of big crowds. I am now excited to use my experience with Next Step as a stepping stone into pastoral teaching.  I can honestly say that my growth in speaking is due to the training and experience I received through Next Step.

Worship Leader 2014, 2015

My Next Step summer internship gave me the hands-on experience I needed as a young worship leader. These summer months helped craft my musical, missional and leadership skills. My internship helped me understand what it would be like to serve in full-time ministry, and has led me into opportunities to tour and into a full-time church position as a Worship Director.

Team Leader 2024, 2025

I  decided to intern with Next Step again because it is truly the best summer you will ever experience. God showed Himself in so many beautiful ways through the 10 week summer, and the community I had the opportunity to serve in and alongside was so amazing!

I’m came back to Next Step for my third year because I have yet to find a more fun and fulfilling way to spend my summer. Through Next Step I have gotten the chance to participate in meaningful construction projects for those who need it most, be apart of amazing worship teams, help guide and grow students in their faith and I have made life long friendships with so many of my outstanding teammates who have helped me grow in my relationship with Christ. I’m very excited for this summers experiences and the memories that come along with them!

I wanted to come back because I had so much fun while still being able to do meaningful work. The people I met are also a big reason I wanted to come back, every person I met was so nice and it was overall just a great experience.

I never imagined I'd be spending three summers interning at Next Step. But it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails." That's proven true in my life time and time again! I’m beyond thankful for the chance to work alongside my awesome teammates, and I can’t wait to see what adventures the Lord has planned for this summer!

Hannah

Serving as emcee for 3 summers with Next Step has totally stretched and grown me in unimaginable ways. I now have the confidence to get up night after night and speak to people from all over. It also taught me that even just one conversation can change someone’s life forever - including mine. Thankful for the opportunity to grow in this way.

I am so overjoyed to return to Guatemala! my first summer interning was truly so life transformative and overall such an incredible experience. I loved being able to serve the community and build connections with the people there, and am excited to continue that for next summer! I can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store and the ways that He will show up again!

Jason

I truly can’t imagine doing something else this summer. From the what some would call chaotic days to the peace that only comes from the Holy Spirit, last summer was a roller coaster I didn’t want to end. My hope is that this summer is no different and yet also different entirely!

Looking back, I never could have expected how life changing nine weeks could be, but now I prepare with anticipation for this upcoming summer. I loved connecting with the ministry in Sumpango, reaching the community we lived in, working with the teams that came each week, and growing alongside the interns I served with. I am excited to once again journey through an experience unlike any other, and I know God is in it all!

Kamiron

I want to serve God and I have a heart for missions. I've loved working with next step as a student and a leader, so I wanted to work with them again. My favorite part of the summer was meeting my future best friends (my team) for the first time during training week and growing with them all summer. Also getting to work with the rescue center in Knoxville was super fulfilling. I especially loved praying over the beds. I'm looking forward to what God has for me. I don't really have many expectations. I just want to see where God takes me!

Juyoung

Living in a country where you get discriminated for being a Christian, I am always thirsty for more worship and opportunities to serve God! Having experienced that last summer and the joy and growth I received in worshiping God in unity with others and serving the community together was pure joy! It wasn’t an easy decision to make when I’m literally on the other side of world, but you know it’s something special when you’re willing to fly 7,097 miles across the globe to do it again!

Ellie

Team Leader 2023, 2024, 2025

I love to serve and see the joy that the Lord has for His children when they serve. I can’t wait to go back to serve the place where I gave my life to Jesus. My favorite memories are the late night laughs that my team had and the worship nights we did as a team.

Kim

Worship Leader 2016, 2017

Interning with Next Step opened my eyes to the importance of community, leaving a profound impact on how I lead worship. When you do a summer with Next Step, you learn what it means to invite others into a space you are comfortable in, but also, learn how to be invited into new territory.  This has allowed me to step into every open door with a confident, “YES!” because I know that God will meet me on the other side ready to show me love through every ministerial position.

FAQS

What are the requirements to be on Next Step Summer Staff?

All applicants must be at least 18 years old and one full year out of high school. Must be a believer in Christ and hold to Next Step’s statement of faith. See the individual positions and requirements for list of specific ministry position requirements for each type of missions position.

Do we have to serve the whole summer? Are there part-time internships/positions?

All internship positions are required to serve the entire summer. There are no part-time internships/positions.

Do we receive any training?

Your summer will start with a week of training in Wisconsin. Here you will learn the ins and outs of the summer and get specific training for your position.

Do these ministry and missions positions help with getting a job in ministry or missions?

Absolutely! We can't begin to tell you how many of our past summer staff now work full time in church ministry or missions work. Additionally, many of our construction interns have had their internship hands on planning and field experience lead to full time high paid construction work!  No matter your specific  position serving in a summer missions position with us, we can tell you there are countless stories of how it will prepare you for full time work in the future!

Is this a christian internship?

Yes! We are a ministry made up of believers who strive to help students explore their faith, experience life changing encounters with Christ, and extend service to others!

Do we get to choose what community we will be serving in?

There are several things we consider when placing our missions summer staff and building the teams. First, we consider your specific skills and talents and how they best fit into the communities we work with and the teams that are set up. We also take into consideration where you would like to serve. Lastly, we place based on Next Step's specific ministry summer staff needs.

Do we have any time off?

Yes. Although Next Step packs a lot of awesome stuff into a week, we get creative with how the missions team is finding rest both during the week and over the weekends

That being said, due to the nature of your position there is not too much downtime on a day-to-day basis. Typical weekends are used to get any supplies needed, set up new projects, have fun in the area, and just rest. You may get tired, but take it from us; it will be well worth it! The position requires your effort 24/7 for 10 weeks.

How are food and lodging handled?

All of your food and lodging is covered for the entire summer! You will be staying at a church or school in the community you live in. Your new bedroom will most likely be a classroom. You will sleep on an air mattress.

Will I be leading a construction site this summer?

Yes! All of our summer staff whether they are hired for worship and programming, construction or missional leadership will help lead middle and high school students in completing a variety of construction projects. This may sound intimidating, but DON'T WORRY, you don’t need any previous experience in construction, we provide training and support for you and understand that most of you have limited or no construction experience.

Do these internships count for school credit?

Yes! We work with a wide number of accredited schools and educational facilities. Please let us know if this is something you need and we can work with your professor or school to be sure you receive the college internship credit you need!
